SEO vs Google Ads: which should a small business start with?

Both put you in front of people searching for what you sell. They work very differently, though, and the right starting point depends on your situation.

When people search for what you sell, there are two ways to appear: earn a place in the regular results with search engine optimization (SEO), or pay for a place at the top with Google Ads. Small businesses often ask which one to choose. The honest answer is that it depends, and often the best plan uses both.

How Google Ads works

With Google Ads you bid on searches, and pay each time someone clicks your ad. Campaigns can be live quickly, and you control exactly which searches, locations and times you appear for.

  • Strengths: fast, predictable, easy to test and switch on or off.
  • Limits: traffic stops when you stop paying, and costs can climb in competitive markets.

How SEO works

SEO means improving your website so Google understands it and ranks it for relevant searches: fixing technical issues, creating useful content and earning trust from other websites.

  • Strengths: no cost per click, and rankings keep bringing visitors over time.
  • Limits: results take time to build, and no one can guarantee a specific ranking.

Start with Google Ads if…

  • You need enquiries soon, for a launch, a slow season or a new service.
  • You want to test which services and messages people respond to.
  • Your website is new and has little search visibility yet.

Start with SEO if…

  • You can invest now for results that build over the coming months.
  • Clicks in your market are expensive.
  • Your customers research carefully before they buy.

Why the best answer is often both

Ads and SEO support each other. Ads bring in enquiries while SEO grows, and they show you which keywords actually convert, so your SEO focuses on searches that bring customers, not just traffic. As organic rankings improve, you can reduce ad spend on the searches you now win for free.

Whatever you choose: set up conversion tracking first. Without knowing which calls, forms and WhatsApp messages came from which channel, you can’t tell what’s working.

A simple way to decide

  1. Work out what a new customer is worth to you.
  2. Check how competitive your key searches are.
  3. Decide how quickly you need results.
  4. Start where the numbers make sense, measure everything, and adjust.
